Johns Trophy Report Middlesex v Surrey The match was played at Bounds Green B.C. in fine weather. Surrey were leading by 10 shots at the half way stage. Although both teams won 9 ends of the remaining 18 left, Surrey gained the advantage by winning multiple shots and limited Middlesex to only 1 or 2 shots per end. The result was Middlesex 108 v Surrey 119. Middlesex won on 4 rinks to get 8 points and Surrey won 2 rinks by large margins to get 14 points. The Middlesex rink of Janine Bancroft, Dot Stanners, Jo White and Kay Stockley were 4–13 down and made a remarkable comeback to win 20-16 and were Middlesex’s top scoring rink. Johns Trophy Isle of Wight v Middlesex Middlesex took 44 players and supporters on their coach to Ventnor. As they left the ferry, the rain started. Ventnor was in low cloud, the rain did stop and the match was played under misty conditions. Middlesex started well and were 47 - 14 up at 5 ends with 5 winning and 1 drawing rinks. The Islanders began to put up some resistance and at 10 ends were winning on 2 rinks,Middlesex were ahead on 3 rinks and level on 1 rink, with Middlesex well in front, leading 83 - 44. At 15 ends, the rink results were still the same, with Middlesex now ahead 107- 65. There was no doubt that Middlesex were going to win but they needed to win on more rinks. Two of the rinks where the Islanders had improved, were given a sharp reminder of their opponents superiority, as Middlesex overpowered them. Middlesex did not fade, winning the last six ends 47 - 19.The final score was Middlesex 154 (5 winning rinks) v Isle of Wight 84 ( 1 winning rink). This was a great performance, and the shot difference could decide our final position in the group. Middlesex Rinks: 1. Isabel Morton, Dawn Slaughter, Cathy Taylor, Ann Halliday 22 - 17 2. Nadine Mullins, Kerry Payne, Terri Watkinson, Marion Bushnell 39 - 4 3. Janine Bancroft, Dot Stanners, Marie Curry, Kay Stockley 20 -13 4. Johns Trophy Middlesex 105 (9 pts) v Sussex 106 (13 pts) There was good support again for the Middlesex Ladies at Bounds Green. Both teams needed to win the match in order to challenge Surrey for top spot. Middlesex had the most to gain with one more match still to play after this. Sussex started well and were 10 shots ahead after 4 ends. Middlesex reacted well and at 10 ends, sussex were just 1 shot in front. Sussex then increased their lead to 8 shots at 15 ends. Despite some good bowling, things were not going Middlesex's way as they fell behind by 13 shots at 17 ends. However our Ladies did not wilt under the pressure and continued bowling well to cut the deficit down to 7 shots after 20 ends. Remarkable last ends from Middlesex saw them 1 shot ahead with just one bowl from Sussex to be played.....both the players and other team members watched and waited for that last bowl to make its way up the green and decide the fate of Middlesex/Sussex. The last bowl brushed against the Middlesex bowl and turned it over. The ensuing measuring resulted in 2 shots to Sussex, giving them victory by 106 shots to Middlesex's 105 shots.
